Recipes from Marche, Italy

For this entry, I made two recipes. Neither of them were especially good, but I don't blame the people who posted the original recipes or any of the traditions they came from, I blame myself and my propensity for Googling things that might kill me.

Recipes from Marche, Italy: Brodetto

A seafood stew with mussels and clams, minus the Vibrio.

Recipes from Marche, Italy: Filone Casereccio

An Italian bread that will come out much better than mine did if you use fresh brewer's yeast and steam.

Recipes from Malta

This is actually the third time I’ve cooked a meal from Malta. The first time, I cooked the meal and then just did not write the blog post. Years went by.

Recipes from Malta: Imqarrun

Imquarrum (also called Imqarrun il-forn) is descended from a dish served in Sicily, but the Maltese have adopted it as a traditional staple. The key to making this dish is to be patient.

I thought I was being clever. Apparently, though, I'm not really that clever.

About this time last week I had that pleased feeling, the one you get when you come up with an idea that you're sure no one has ever come up with before, like the feeling that cheese guy must have had. You know, the cheese guy. That first guy who looked at a lump of moldy milk and thought to himself, "Ooo, I should try eating that." And after realizing that he had not just committed suicide and could maybe actually sell moldy milk to other people and call it "gourmet," he must have felt really clever. Like he was on to something.

Well, it turns out I was not in fact really clever nor was I on to anything when I came up with what I thought was the brilliant idea of cooking one meal from every nation in the world and blogging about it. It's been done before. More than once, actually.

But I am still going to do it, because I think it will be really fun. I also think it has the potential for being at least mildly entertaining, especially when you consider that I'm going to attempt to feed all of this food to my four children, ages 6, 5, 3 and 1.

Just a few notes before I start on this project:

1) I really don't want someone calling CPS on me for starving my children, which is probably what will happen if I try to force too much culinary education on them in too short time. They will be tortured enough if this happens to them once a week. So, this blog will be updated weekly instead of daily.

2) I live in a small town in Northern California, where exotic ingredients aren't that easy to come by. I may mail order a few things, but let's face it ... I'm a stay-at-home mom with four kids so I'm not going to be spending $37.99 plus $9.99 shipping for extract of octopus sucker, which is not something I anticipate using on more than one occasion. So while I will do my best to stay true to the spirit of a recipe, I may substitute or exclude. When I do, I will tell you so.

3) I'm also--at great risk to my four-and-a-half-star chef rating--going to post all the recipes I try to make, along with each country of origin, on Food.com (and on this blog) in the hope that someone out there will cook along with me. If you want to view the recipes over there, my chef ID is GiddyUpGo.

So here it is, the unofficial list of nations of the world. Depending on who you ask, there are between 168 and 258 countries on Earth, so what the hell, I've never been one for taking the easy way out. I'm going to do the long list, which at one country a week I figure should take me about five years.
